Answer this Question

Here is a news story about a New Jersey mother who apparently took her young child into a tanning salon and allowed her to tan. While it remains to be seen if the alleged act actually occurred (judging from the looks of the mom, my guess is it did), it brings up a question which has never been answered to my satisfaction. Why isn't childbearing regulated?  Why is no license required for people to have children?

I am not a person who thinks everything should be regulated, but let's be real.  We require people to get licenses to drive cars and get married. We require tanning salon operators to get licenses.  I think becoming a parent is at least as important as those things, especially considering the damage that is caused when people who have no business having children have them.

Why is it that I had to get a license to get married and even had to have a special blood test, yet Joe Blow who is an abusive alcoholic with anger management issues, a criminal record and the farthest thing from daddy material, can bring as many children into the world as he pleases and screw them up royally?

Why is childbearing treated as a right instead of a privilege when the act affects the well-being of others and can pose a hazard to society, not to mention be a drain on society?

Why is it that the people who are the least suited to parenthood are the ones spawning the most?

Can anyone answer these questions?  If so, you will get a gold star and be named Childfreedom Commenter of the Week.

More Octo-Insanity

Here's another spot about Nadya Suleman that just leaves you scratching your head on so many levels.

Despite having gone on every talk show in the nation, hiring 3 publicists and soliciting donations on-line with a web site, she expresses shock at the paparazzi feeding frenzy at her house when she brought the first 2 octuplets home.

She says she keeps trying to convince herself that it will all die down soon, and that she and her family will get to have the privacy they desire. She desires privacy and she's going on Dr. Phil, the Today Show and every other venue she can drag her post-partum ass on? That sounds like a media whore to me, not someone seeking privacy!

She also admits in this spot that had she not gotten financial assistance from Dr. Phil, et al., she would have been "forced" to go on government assistance. One of the correspondents in this clip asks, "who FORCED her to have all these babies?" She's just realizing NOW that she wouldn't be able to afford 8 more babies?

Ugh. It gives me a headache.

As an aside...there's something funny in this clip. Check out the correspondant, Tamika Ray checking herself out before she realizes the camera is on her. It's at the 53 second mark.

Just when you think you've heard it all...

...a mother gets arrested for driving while simultaneously breast feeding and talking on her cell phone.

Just another sad example of a person who has no business having children.

Over the Coals

She's baaaack.

In this interview, Ann Curry rakes Nadya Suleman over the coals about irresponsibility and selfishness. It is fascinating to listen to Suleman's rationale in explaining how she is not irresponsible and selfish.

Suleman states she currently has no income coming in (except for her children's disability payments and food stamps). She was using student loans to support her family, but at this point that source of money has dried up (incidentally, aren't there any rules regulating the use of student loans for purposes other than school?). At the same time, she explains that she is responsible because she will be able to support her children once she is finished school in a year or so.

Question #1: how does she expect to pay for her final year of graduate school when she's used up her student loans to support her family?

Question #2: If she has no source of income right now, how will she support her family while she is finishing up her graduate degree and then trying to find a job?

I guess that's where the media comes in - the book deals, the magazine deals, the interview deals, the reality show, the Lifetime Movie of the Week. Face it, you know they are coming. In fact, just this week it was reported that she's been offered a cool million to star in (of all things) a porn film. Let's also not forget her Beg-a-Thon website with PayPal functionality as well. Oh, and her poor friends, family and church members who have to step up to the plate to support her egregious lifestyle.

And this, above all, is what enfuriates me - that obscene selfishness and irresponsibility gets rewarded in our culture; that when all is said and done, it's all about MONEY (and ratings); that people who live responsibly and within their means have to work their asses off for every dollar they get, while narcissistic, self-absorbed nutcases like Nadya Suleman get everything handed to them on a silver platter.
