Overwhelmed Parents Dump their Kids

Apparently, parenthood is so overwhelming for some people that they are dumping their kids at Nebraska hospitals. You see, like most states, Nebraska has the Safe Haven Law which allows parents to abandon their unwanted children at a hospital, no questions asked. Unlike other states, however, Nebraska does not have restrictions on the ages of the abandoned children, so although the Safe Haven Law was generally intended as a protection for newborns born to unwed teen mothers who are prone to dumping them in trashcans, Nebraska's law has opened the floodgates to all overwhelmed parents. As you will hear in this report, over half of the kids abandoned at Nebraska hospitals are teens and some of those kids are driven across state lines to be dumped in Nebraska.

Ah, parenthood. The ultimate of life's fulfilment and joy.

You want to know what irks me the most about it? The 2 to 5 year waiting list to adopt infants in the US. If these idiots had recognized their own lack of abilities when the baby was born, there would have been a LINE of people waiting to take the child. But now that they've totally demented the kids and assured they'll likely not ever be well adjusted members of society, NOW they want to dump them. Nice.

Love the blog!

I think that if a parent says that they don't want their child any more, they should be believed.

Bring back orphanages, STAT. Anyone who doubts that even an orphanage of limited means can be a good place for a child to grow up (at least a better place than with a family who doesn't love them and/or has no earthly clue how to raise them) should read "The Cider House Rules" by John Irving...

Thank you for your comment on my blog. I was actually so depressed that day because one of my closest friends got pregnant with her idiotic boyfriend. She's keeping the baby, and not only that, but she's MARRYING the guy because of the baby. What a distaster. This may sound dramatic, but I feel as if I've lost a friend.

Thank you again,

-Emily

This just proves again that people want BABIES but do not want to deal with raising that baby into a pre-teen or teenager.

I just came across this today. What a great story!

Okay, so maybe the law was not intended to apply to teenagers dropped off at a hospital. So tell me where you draw the line then -- "sorry, once he's one year old you're stuck with him even if it kills you."

I feel sorry for the hospital staff. It's hard enough dealing with ill and injured human misery all day. Now they have to be babysitters, too.

Only half serious here, but Omaha is missing out on a great economic opportunity. Look at Guangzhou, in China. There's a giant adoption industry in China that channels who knows how many millions of dollars every year into the local economy. Entire hotels that get most of their money from soon-to-be parents. People fly in from all over the world, spend a few days and a lot of money, and leave with a child. Giant toy and stroller stores right next door to the hotels -- location, location, location. Think outside the box, Nebraskans.

TEENAGERS? Can you imagine how hurt and traumatized some of those poor kids must be? It's funny when so many parents insist that parenthood makes us all "better people." *rolls eyes*

Exactly. Now THIS is selfishness...

OH SHUT UP NEBRASKA LAW MAKERS AND LITTLE MISS FAMILY PSYCHIATRIST. I hate this crap where people only care about babies, screw kids and teenagers who probably have to live in hell with parents who don't want them. And it's not always a sad boo-hoo crisis- quit kissing these child abandoners' butts- actually some parents just don't want their children because they are lazy and selfish. Our society grotesquely over glorifies childhood and parents.

I believe children these days would be a lot better behaved if they knew that they could just as easily be "dumped" by their parents at a hospital like some people "dump" an unwanted pet at the animal shelter.
